What Is a Statute of Limitations?

Most crimes have a statute of limitation that assigns what is essentially a deadline for filing charges for a specific crime. When you hire a felony defense attorney in Denver, CO, one of the first things he or she will do is verify that the charges against you were made within the period allowed under the statute of limitation for that crime.

Statutes of limitation vary depending on the charge. Under Colorado law, many misdemeanors have statutes of limitation that range from 18 months to five years. If you are charged with a misdemeanor for which there is a statute of limitations of two years, for instance, the charges must refer to a crime that the police and prosecutors believe happened within the two years prior to the date you were charged. Some felony crimes, including murder, have no statutes of limitation. For any crime for which there is no statute of limitation, you can be charged at any point in time, regardless of how long ago the alleged incident took place.
